For me, two reasons:
- I hate bots (90 pct of my down votes)
- I don't agree with the views of the poster (remaining 10 pct)
So, I guess it's my love of SN, mostly. I don't want bots to have a chance here. No direct financial gain to down vote other than keeping SN free from bots.
For SN's scale, I don't think downzaps are very effective because they only slightly reduce the visibility of bad content. In my opinion, they are wasted sats. I've even considered that there might be a perverse effect: more bots, more downzaps, more daily rewards. This could be exploited!
I want SS to downzap me because then it becomes a zap downzap battle and I just reap the benefit

it used to be scams until ~ halfway last year then it became bots. THis week I'm only downzapping them once tho, because I'm testing a new selfish policy.

I almost always forget to downzap. Back when users could be outlawed I did it more. Now I mostly mute and move on.
When I see something that's getting some visibility and is pure slop, whether AI or organic, I do downzap it.

Offensive comments that are disrespectful and negatively affect the quality of conversation. I don't downvote when I just disagree with someone.
I mainly downzap people or bots talking about crypto. Plenty of other places for that.
I have yet to make a single downzap. Something holding me back.
