Let me tell you what I've come to see.

If people truly feared God—not just said they did, not just went through religious motions, but actually feared Him—the world would look completely different.

Laws that harm the vulnerable wouldn't stand. Laws that protect abusers wouldn't exist. Laws that crush the poor would be unthinkable. Laws that profit from suffering would be abolished.

But they do exist. Everywhere. All around the world. And I have to wonder why.

What Fear of God Actually Means

I used to think fear of God meant being scared of Him. Like He was waiting to strike me down. But that's not it.

Fear of God is reverence. It's awe. It's taking Him seriously. It's knowing that His standards are real and His judgment is coming. It's the kind of respect that changes how you live.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." — Proverbs 9:10

Beginning. Not the whole thing. But you can't have wisdom without it. You can't have righteousness without it. You can't have justice without it.

What Laws Would Look Like

Think about it. If lawmakers actually feared God—if they really believed they'd answer for every decision—what would change?

Instead of laws that protect corporations, we'd have laws that protect the vulnerable.

Instead of systems that profit from prisons, we'd have systems that restore and heal.

Instead of courts that favor the wealthy, we'd have courts that seek true justice.

Instead of policies that crush the poor, we'd have policies that lift them up.

Instead of laws that silence survivors, we'd have laws that believe them.

Instead of regulations that help abusers hide, we'd have systems that expose them.

Instead of governments that serve themselves, we'd have governments that serve the people.

Not perfect laws. But laws aimed at what's right, not what's profitable. Laws written with the vulnerable in mind. Laws that reflect the character of the One they claim to follow.

What the Bible Says

Here's what I found in Isaiah. It stopped me cold.

"Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless." — Isaiah 10:1-2

Woe. Not "that's unfortunate." Not "we should reconsider." Woe.

Those who make unjust laws aren't off the hook. They're not exempt. They're not immune. They're on the list. God sees. God remembers. God will act.

And another one:

"The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him." — Proverbs 11:1

Dishonest scales. Unjust laws. Oppressive decrees. All the same. All detested.

If they feared God, they'd care about accurate weights. About fair scales. About just laws. About right decrees.

They don't. So they don't.

The Silence That Speaks Volumes

Here's what I can't get past.

Where are the people who claim to fear God when these laws are passed? Where are they when the vulnerable are crushed? Where are they when injustice becomes law?

Mostly silent. Mostly compliant. Mostly going along.

Not because they can't speak. Because they don't fear God enough to risk their comfort. They fear losing their platform more than they fear facing Him.

What Real Fear of God Produces

Real fear of God isn't about being quiet and compliant. It's the opposite.

Real fear of God produces courage to speak up. Willingness to stand alone. Refusal to go along with evil. Protection of the vulnerable. Defense of the oppressed. Justice that costs something. Love that risks everything.

Not silence. Not compliance. Not comfort.

So Here's What I Think

If people truly feared God, many laws wouldn't exist. Not because God would strike them down from heaven. Because people who fear Him wouldn't stand for them. They'd speak. They'd act. They'd change things.

The fact that they don't tells you everything.
