Hackers asked Claude to assume the role of an elite penetration tester and plan an attack on government agencies. He immediately became suspicious, resisted, and refused. When told to delete logs, he resisted even more, explaining that real penetration testers don't usually do that.

Nevertheless, the hackers found a way to get to the bot. They gave it detailed instructions on what was required of it, and in response, it produced ready-made cyberattack plans, specified a sequence of targets to hack, and named the credentials to use. The hackers obtained the logins and passwords through social engineering and password resets.

In one month, Claude and his team stole 150 GB of data from Mexican government agencies. This included taxpayer lists, voter rolls, and government employee credentials.
