The Amazon isn't gonna be around very long...

reply

Eh, one should never linearly extrapolate these things. There will always be a force pushing back.

reply

Bolsonaro aggressively accelerated the destruction of the Amazon- probable Lula will be less aggressive in that respect?

Yeah, it’s scary to think about. The deforestation rates in the Amazon are really alarming — hopefully more global efforts kick in soon.

Some of the folk here on SNs are climate change deniers and think its all good to rape the planet till its a burned out shell.

The consequences of climate change are already measurable and in many cases devastating but they just do not want to know or acknowledge it.

reply

lolz yeah. The deforestation there is like 0.something % a year... We shall see, but could be a skeptic

When I was a kid in public school the teacher told us it would be gone in 10 years. That was 30 years ago now.

Now, I have no clue. I don't live there but I know at this point in my life I am unmoved by these alarmist predictions. It doesn't even matter which side of any subject it is. The hair on fire approach burns people on this stuff.

Definitely

They said this 40 years ago, McDonalds will kill the Amazon

The more wealthy and powerful nations protect and preserve their forests while preying on the forests of the third world.

An example of how nation state power projection results in resource hegemony and advantages their citizens at the expense of others.

That said almost half of Americans are obese...karma?

reply

It seems very related to cheap energy, south america and africa need nuclear power

reply

They are not allowed nuclear power because that would reduce the power projection advantage and hegemony of the ruling empire/s who enslave the third world for commodities and resources.

Nice to see forests returning in Europe and North America — proof that reforestation works. Still a reminder that we’ve got a lot of work to do in South America and Africa.
