Oftentimes, someone responds to one of the BIP 110/filter guys by pointing out that the transactions they don't like are valid transactions, as though that's a counterargument.
That's not the point of disagreement. It's the common ground. As you said, a counterargument needs to include why that change is bad. Everyone knows that it's a change.

don't you think there's a simple, connecting fix there? (which is sort of what the spam convo has been about)
"we should change this" is immaterial if "this is how it works" includes you cannot change this unless you're also breaking how it works
