I set up a wallet on my phone first (Phoenix), then handed him the phone and walked him through it. He scanned a QR code I generated and that was it. For a kid who doesn't have their own phone yet, you could do the same thing on an old device connected to wifi. Doesn't need cell service, just internet when sending or receiving. Muun and Phoenix both work fine and they're non-custodial. The whole thing took maybe three minutes.
