Great to see a post from years ago getting LIT up here (especially since it was one from before my time).

I know. It's very strange and interesting. We talked about the problem of evergreen posts for years. In the end it was a simple fix.

I think we still need two things:

  1. We need to get better about linking to old posts when we're talking about stuff.
  2. Zapping these posts needs to factor into rewards.

Maybe the second one already happened but it's not clear to me yet that it has.

Search fixes (1).

  1. Search needs to work as well as it can.
  2. Search needs to be available while writing without leaving your writing.

Once we have search in place, we can start building more features around items referencing items.

As someone with tens of thousands of SN items, I'm really looking forward to those search improvements.

Me too. I went on a search research rabbit hole while I was QAing and self-reviewing the lit changes. There are many simple things that we aren't doing well or at all.

This is all complicated by my insistence that SN's backend be self-hosting compatible, which limits me to FOSS solutions. But the FOSS stuff around search is improving rapidly.
