- It's a serious question. All of our media is full of endless Chicken Little calls from those ostensibly working in AI, acting as if they have no choice but to disrupt and destroy civilization with the technology they must build (for some reason?). And then they fill my RSS and news feed with their incessant warnings, even after I've worked on filtering them out.
- My take on it is this: Who in the world is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to "build AI" if you're so terrified of it? You could just leave and 'not do that' if you hate it so much. There are plenty of people already who 'aren't working on AI'—it's the easiest thing in the world to 'not work on AI.' I myself don't work on AI all the time, as if I have nothing to do with that industry.
- ERGO: Since none of them seem to think this way, but are intent on spreading sheer and outrageously effeminate FUD throughout the interwebs... what am I to think? It seems AI is the new Global Warming: "By 2030, the world will be fucked if we don't do this, that, or this other thing..."
- Did you know the Wright Brothers minded their own business and told hardly anyone but powered flight? Society truly suffers under a plague of attention-whoredom at the moment. I must say, this panicky culture we live in is irritating. Do you think in the 1820s and 1830s there were bros filling the newspapers:
"GUYS! YOU ARE REALLY NOT READY FOR WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON! INTERNAL COMBUSTION IS HERE AND YOU ARE NOT READY FOR IT!"
"GUYS! SOMETHING IS HAPPENING WITH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AND WE ARE NOT READY FOR IT!"
"GUYS! I AM ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED OF THIS INTERNAL COMBUSTION THING I AM WORKING ON!"
(The answer is no. They just shut the fuck up back then, worked, minded their own business, and let the world deal their products on its own time).
p.s. Yes, this is absolutely a rant inspired by my latest RSS feed that I am paying 10 sats to post for my own mental exercise. It seems no matter how many people I mute, I can't stop hearing about how AI is at the precipice of ruining and impoverishing me.
p.p.s. How ya'll doing? I haven't been on SN much the past month. Busy busy!
Have you not met a Boomer?
Ask one anything about cars and they'll go on and on about every car they've ever owned, driven, wanted, seen, etc.
