I actually don’t find indentured servitude offensive. Isn’t the idea (offering physical labour in exchange for food and accommodation) the premise of programmes like WWOOF? Maybe I’m missing something.

I think the major feature of indentured servitude is that you can't choose to leave your service before the time is up. If you do, you legally become a criminal.

It's taught in American history classes because a lot of early Americans bought passage to the new world by pledging indentured servitude
