Not to surprised by this. What a lot of folks outside scientific academia don't know is that you pretty much have to subscribe to the existing majority thought pattern taught in a field to get "promoted" and move up into the professor ranks. Only then can find a niche to breakaway into, and your research still needs to align with the body of academia in charge to be taken serious. That's what all those Academies of Science essentially enforced. The exiled rogues ended up being pushed aside and forgotten in many cases unless their breakthrough couldn't be ignored.
