In 1977 the two voyager satellites were launched from Earth to survey and photograph our solar system, yet few know these celestial probes were also designed for first contact with aliens.
Carl Sagan, cosmologist and author of Contact, in collaboration with NASA designed a golden plate, a vinyl record with sounds and data as the proverbial 'message in a bottle' to introduce us to the aliens.
The record contains scientific data (earth data, DNA, human reproduction, etc), music, sounds of the earth and vocal greetings in 55 languages (of which some were recorded by the same guy; I'm not sure these countries feel properly represented, but anyway).
Nudity Criticism
The early design of the record contained an image of a naked man and a woman as depicted in my drawing. Ensuing protests led to a change in image of only the silhouette without detailed genitals.
Funny enough, I had drawn this picture in 4th grade already as I liked to draw and knew everything about space. One of my fellow students reported me, the teacher came to my desk and ripped the drawing apart. I guess the nudity criticism was (and still is) a wide spread phenomenon.
Representability
First off, I admire Carl Sagan quite a lot and his effort to have actually attached this record to the space craft, because without him these probes might have just been purely scientific. Better to have something of an introductory record of planet Earth and humanity, than nothing at all.
However, everybody obviously has an opinion about what should have gone on the plate. If this probe would have been launched in 2026 in the internet era, I'm not even sure it would have been launched without a major upset by basically every nation/person on the planet. In the 70s Carl was still able to slip it onboard without too much international trouble.
Have a look at the contents, I find the choices hilarious. Though overall I'd say it's a good, interesting and creative selection.
Errors
One of the scientific data that's not accurate anymore is the declassification of Pluto from the 9th planet to a dwarf planet. In the plaque (see picture above) the previously 9 planets are depicted below next to Sun (largest circle). I hope the aliens with their more advanced knowledge of the galaxy will still be able to navigate to our solar system after this serious scientific blunder.
Or luckily, if these aliens are actually to be malevolent, we might have seriously confused them with this bad map and we might have prevented a major planetary invasion and the death of the human race.
PHEW!!!
The woman looks upset about something! Ahahah
She's like "Why does he need to wave? That's soooo patriarchical! That's not how we got married."
Hahaha! That face doesn’t look like a first-date face for aliens! But who knows? Maybe for aliens, annoyed means happy and happy means annoyed! Hahaha
Or the aliens conclude we have some serious inequality issues. They'll let us cook for a while more I think.
