Is there a video platform like YouTube on nostr? Is this even possible?

Others have mentioned torrents, which is worth investigating for ordinary video files.

Another option is vector animations (a la Flash). I'm not saying we should revive Flash (may it remain dead). On the contrary, a new vector animation markup language is needed. SVG can do some of what is needed, but SVG requires Javascript to do more than trivial animations, especially for interactivity. And adding a scripting language to a Nostr NIP would be a very bad idea, because the security of scripting engines is generally poor; Chrome and Firefox just barely manage to keep Javascript in random websites from getting at your passwords.

I have a design for a markup language that would do what is needed (animations, sound, interactivity without scripts). And what's more, it is generic enough to be used as a replacement for HTML too. For that language to go anywhere, I would need someone to work with, since I don't have time to do the coding.

Sure it's possible. The issue is paying for bandwidth and storage. We have to get out of the "everything is free"mentality of corporate social media, where users are the product.

Nostr is a protocol for text messages. It is not designed for storing media like pictures and videos. You can upload videos somewhere and insert them into your Nostr notes.

But your question is about decentralisation and censorship? Then you have to go to decentralised networks like IPFS or arweave.

What about each user stores its own videos?

reply

What if a user is offline but i want to watch his video?

reply

You can also download it to store it yourself, like in torrent

reply

i mean stream.

reply

You can stream videos from torrent

reply

what if user is offline and I didn't download it though?

reply

If something is popular enough more people will download it. And if you upload videos and want people to see them you will have them on your server 24h online.

reply

the idea that everyone would run their own server is like 20 years old. probably not gonna happen

only if the peer is online

I can watch videos on Amethyst on my Android. It is a nostr client

reply

the video file is not served over nostr. The video file is most likely served from a CDN (content delivery network)

reply

Not possible unless you have serious infrastructure, meaning not only servers, storage, routers and switches.. I mean serious fiber infrastructure, multi megawatt hyperscale datacenters spread around the globe and of course edge infrastructure for large ISPs.

In my opinion, creating a video platform on Nostr is feasible cookie clicker, but it will require many additional solutions to solve problems related to storage, bandwidth, content management and video quality.

im fine with it as long as you pay for it.

on YouTube, you can store your video file in exchange for YouTube getting all your data, a huge cut of your ad revenue etc. How will you incentivice nostr relay operators to store your huge ass video files?

Maybe in the future, you can, with LN. Are you ready to pay for it tho?

reply

Lol good luck to whoever plans to store those files and paying for that storage, maybe they can set you up with linking your own IPFS account or something and you pay for your own storage

reply

There is no video file delivered over NOSTr. It's quite likely that a content delivery network (CDN) is serving the video file.
slice master

It needs to be funded by lightning payments

reply

Yeah I get the LN payment I'm just saying what would your storage options be

  • AWS or one of its competitors
  • IPFS
  • Store and seed yourself
reply

дорого... цена хранения твоих видео? 1 день 1 сатоши. пойдет???
