I'm more outgoing on SN, but it's probably because of the subject matter. I'm surprised at the high density of people that share my interests here.

Good point. Having shared interests is important. It feels harder to forge those connections irl. Sports would be one way, but I've never been much interested.

As an American Male, learning how to pretend to be interested in fiat sports is something like a survival instinct

That's sad. Either enjoy them earnestly or admit to being lame.

it should be possible to appreciate sports in general, and enjoy specific sporting events, without faking emotional investment in any following. sure, the adrenaline might be vicarious rather than hard-earned, however it still gives you an earnest enjoyment.

I don't think it is lame to admit that you didn't care about the scoreboard before or after witnessing an event.

reply

It's not lame at all to admit you don't care about sports. It's the not caring about sports part that makes one lame (or at least that makes a red-blooded American male lame).

I didn't really phrase my point well. There are multiple ways to care about sports... specific sports? specific groups? recurring events?

Appreciation of the importance of athleticism is probably closest to caring about specific events [and their recurrence, rather than simply liking the rules of some sport without worrying how often they are tested]. It's a little similar to "belief in belief" devoid of opinion about which specific day the community congregates.

I've tried sending @Undisciplined to the gulag repeatedly for his unruly behavior, but he never changes

Oh I'm super earnest about the sports ball. Did you see when wide power fielder Harris hit the three point grand slam yesterday? Riveting stuff, riveting

You should say “…kicked the three point grand slam…”

I've been exposed
