“Africa adoption” doesn’t show up on Stacker News as a press release. It shows up as people earning sats for writing, builders posting nodes and payment rails, community projects getting funded in public, all in the same feed as everyone else.
What already exists:
Operators are shipping Lightning infrastructure and documenting it on SN. Africa Free Routing posted their Kenya node launch and talks openly about latency, merchant fee pressure, and why local routing matters. That’s what adoption looks like: infrastructure, not announcements.
Projects raise money in the open. Bitcoin Nakawa in Zambia is the cleanest example, a real crowdfunding campaign on Geyser (a Bitcoin-based fundraising platform) with updates, comments, and sats moving. No gatekeepers required.
Ecosystem mapping happens as regular content, not special events. “Trailblazers” lists, project roundups, discovery threads. They're a living index of who’s building where, updating as people show up.
Coordination happens in-thread. Bootcamps, meetups, merchant pushes get announced the SN way: someone posts it, others respond, sats follow.
The broader mechanic: SN turns contribution into an economy. Zaps and fees split between authors, territories, and the rewards pool. Daily rewards amplify active contributors. The percentages matter less than the consistency: publish something useful, get paid in sats.
Why Africa threads feel real: constraints get discussed openly. Building for intermittent connectivity, cash-based communities, and regulatory choke points means the stack changes. Tools like Machankura—an SMS-based Bitcoin and Lightning wallet that works on feature phones without internet—exist specifically to route around smartphone assumptions. Regulatory policy still shapes on-ramps and custodial patterns.
SN question:
what’s the #1 adoption killer in your experience: onboarding friction, liquidity/on-ramps, Lightning reliability, or regulation?
