What Chaga isWhat Chaga is

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is conk mushroom that parasitizes and grows on the silver birch. Birch trees are known throughout northern regions of the globe for the medicinal properties of their bark, which the chaga fungus absorbs. It contains a triterpene called betulin, shown to be protective against cardiovascular and liver diseases, cancer, diabetes, oxidative stress, and inflammation^[1].

Chaga has a dark and rough appearance on the outside, and has a brightly orange coloured interior.

It can take several years to decades to grow and fully mature. Airborne chaga spores infect living birch trees and will eventually produce fruits that can reach 25-30cm in width^[2]. Over-harvesting can prematurely kill the host tree, so it is important to observe sustainable harvesting practices.

How Chaga is usedHow Chaga is used

On its own, chaga can be steeped in hot water to make a dark, tea-like beverage that has a robust flavour. It can also be ground up and added to your favourite coffee or tea for a more mild flavour.
