Little understood fact of US system: Its called the 3-tier system....(a) Maker / Brewer, (b) Distributor, (c) Retailer.

You can be one but not the others*.

This is most evident when you travel to countries without these restrictions, like in UK most of the Pubs are owned by the big breweries...imagine if in US there were "Budweiser" and "Coors" bars....

This system was put in place as a way to protect the mafia, which were voting against repealing prohibition since they were making so much money from illegal trade. So the decision was to cement their distribution routes into law.

  • = there is a now exceptions to that law, but they are very narrow. Like a brew-pub can brew beer onsite and sell it. But it must be consumed onsite and can't offer "retail sales".

most states that have legalized cannabis like california have similar restrictions:

grower or producer
distribution
retailer

most companies circumvent by setting up shell corps and subsidiaries

The Mash = is the heated grain / barley that is "mashed up" and used as the base to ferment beer or liquor.

Commonly called a "mash bill" to represent the different quantities instead of a "recipe".
