my bigger writing projects are on hold, so here is some tea i'm spilling about halfassed young adult shows that are overly popular.
outer banks is a stupidly STUPIDLY predictable treasure hunting show with the writing and plots being subpar, the characters are romeo and juliet coded, and its only getting renewed year after year because all the actors have a first degree of pretty privilege. i still to this day don't understand why shadow and bone (phenomenal books btw), the irl winx saga show, and chilling adventures of sabrina were canceled. at least they had some degree of highly staked plots to them that were actually interesting.
might i mention it's also very stupidly addictive in a weird way? in the way that you can watch an episode from any season, and predict the outcome in like ten minutes of watching.
i wonder what melodramatic non-substance plot will come for season 5 after that anticlimactic death in 4.
This is tv. My sister watches a lot of tv while doing other things (i've never been able to do this) and I'd guess shows like the one you describe are made for people who watch tv in similar ways. It's background noise so one doesn't feel alone or bored? (it's probably not so different from shows like the office or seinfeld or cheers or happy days or I love Lucy).
A lot of people will straight up admit that they just want shows to veg out on. They're not looking for anything too thought-provoking or stimulating
Agree, It's like wasting idle time with an excuse, a terrible one.
They have to fill their programming with something between the digestible shows they spend money and energy trying to make.
