Some pregnant women follow the Louwen diet, a diet with a low glycemic index that doesn´t cause huge spikes in blood sugar and insulin. This is supposed to reduce birth pain and make birth easier and quicker. Recent studies show how this type of diet also influences the newborn: children of women who followed a diet with a low glycemic index and glycemic load (low in refined carbohydrates and sugar) and high carbohydrate quality (rich in fiber) showed advantages in language and motor development.
