I sort of took on the role of family historian about 15 years ago. I always liked hearing family stoties as a kid anyway. I started with genealogy. I interviewed a lot of my older relatives and took notes. I couldn't believe what I discovered- some incredible things. I wound up digging up old newspaper accounts, birth records, etc. I even collected stuff from the National Archives. Then I wrote up some short histories of different branches of the family. Obviously I can't share the stuff without doxxing myself. It was fun.

My mom doesn't write so the last time we talked I asked her to buy a little audio recorder and talk about her life. We haven't spent much time together so I haven't heard most of her stories.
I was motivated by my Persian grandmother, who I never met, getting on. I had this urge to interview her. I was certain I'd learn things that even my dad didn't know (also he's not really a talker).
