The add on hardware has a GPS unit that in the time to boot up had already spotted 20 satellites. I have other low power mesh devices that never see that many (7-8) from same location

Curious about this satellite use, they are nodes in this mesh? This picture looks like you are indoor, is that much indoor?

Just using GPS for location on a LoRa mesh but this unit is getting 20+ sats (29 high) right next to my other mesh devices with 8 visible... Granted two different satellite constellations. Both inside. It also locked in fast.
