The Tao Te Ching is a collection of sayings probably written around 600 BCE. It was traditionally attributed to Lau-Tzu, but modern scholars think it is more likely a collection of the works of many.
Lautzu, court archivist, left China disillusioned during a period in pre-modern history period characterized by political chaos, critiques of ritual and moralism and alternative models of non-coercive government.
The text, which is even today sought out for its wisdom, posited a system of thinking that subverted the status quo doctrines of the time.

The most submissive thing in the world can ride roughshod over the most unyeildthing in the world--that which is without substance entering that which has no gaps. That is why I know the benefit of taking no action. The teaching that uses no words, the benefit of taking no action, these are beyond the understanding of all but a very few in the world.

Excessive stinginess
Is sure to lead to great expense;
Too much store
Is sure to end in immense loss.
Knowing contentment
You will suffer no humiliation;
Knowing when to stop
You will be free from danger;
You will thereby endure.
