I wouldn't say running a LN node profitably is easy to do. But if you had a reasonable allocation, chose peers reliably, have low time preference frame of mind, available resources and carefully minimize chain fees, there's nothing to stop you making smallish regular/irregular fees from routing.
I guess there's a learning curve there, you could also incur more fees than you take, but it is what it is. Your not increasing your stack in cold storage.
I have considered creating one but everything I've read and watched has said it's not profitable...

I'll pass the buck to comment any further, personally, probably have not broke even considering mistakes I've made but have learned a lot in the process and started to see things even out in a year or two
