Many years I have heard and didn't doubt that if the US had not got involved in WW2 that the US would have been overtaken by Germany and Japan. Now I think this is foolish. Of course if you don't account for the nuke that is. That's a different story.
Yeah the nuke would have been a challenge but conquering all of the USA will still be a tremendous challenge.
Most people don’t know that more casualties came from fire bombing Tokyo for days on end then the nukes we dropped on them. If Japan wasn’t an island and had resources I don’t think the nukes end the war.

TLDR you don't invade a country, you infiltrate and de-stabilize it, then let it tear itself apart and rule over the ashes.
Doesn't take more than a few dozen operators in pickup trucks and 50BMGs plinking at substations to take down the entire electric grid for an extended period. No unambiguous EMP or Cyber Attacks required. That, combined with infiltrated government, corporations, and psychological operations that have been ongoing for decades, means the only defense is a constant state of stand-off we're in... hense why everything feels high tension. You don't need an invasion force when you can with a flip of a switch convince half the population the other half is being manipulated by a foreign power.

Not a great business to be in when you have lost the supply of a vital input supply chain.
The reality is that USA cannot make weapons sufficient to fight a war of scale anymore because China will not sell it or any supplier to it the rare earths essential to modern warfare.
China won the trade war and USA lost its military industrial combine hegemony...with that goes the petrodollar and the extraordinary privilege...
