From Thinking Basketball

Why are offenses more efficient than ever? This video is about the 2026 NBA officiating style, and how offenses are pushing the boundaries of the rules further than ever, handicapping defenses in the process. Is a balance between offensive and defensive rules even important?

Ben continues doing the lord's work documenting the disgusting state of modern officiating. More than any of the previous videos, this one hits on my main pet-peeves. I still can't, for the life of me, understand why this garbage is allowed. Everyone seems to hate it and it's extremely obvious.

I think you're missing the point. The NBA is not basketball, like college hoops, it is basketball entertainment. It is the WWE, for basketball. That's all there is to it.

reply

I agree with that, broadly, but that doesn't explain this.

Fans don't like seeing tons of defensive fouls, we know that from how popular the brief reform was a couple of seasons ago. I also doubt that fans enjoy the ridiculous leniency on traveling.

reply

It's all offense and points. Fans want to see their favorite player jam the ball and score 30 ppg. Traveling in the NBA is not a thing, it is just a way to move to the basket and get more points.

I have to say, I'm always amazed that anyone actually watches the NBA. I don’t. At least the WWE embraces the while thing and is funny, hilarious at times. I'll pause and watch it for that reason.

Can’t be worse than NFL officiating!

reply

I think it is actually. There aren’t as many egregious blown calls but the complete disregard for so many rules has really perverted how the game is played.

reply

That’s probably right. It’s also quite a bit more noticeable in the NFL when an egregious call is made where as in NBA even if an egregious call is made or missed it probably has marginal impact on the game unless it is right at the end of the game. There aren’t too many times we point to a play in the 3rd quarter in an NBA game where we say that call or missed call changed the whole game whereas that happens often enough in the NFL.
