I actually don't have any. There are a few people in my family that I basically forced to buy and hold bitcoin in cold storage but none of them have delved into everything that makes Bitcoin fascinating.
I have a few friends that I got into bitcoin in the 2017 hype cycle but made the terrible mistake of getting them to use either Coinbase or Kraken. Every single one of them is still shitcoining and telling me why various crypto projects are so interesting and innovative.
They are my long time pre-bitcoin friends and that won't change but we can never go much past surface level talk on Bitcoin.
Do most people here have Bitcoin maximalist friends? Are they people you knew before getting into Bitcoin?
Maybe 3 friends, but at least two of them are shitcoining.
One tried to get me onto Bitcoin for some time with no luck, until I eventually was offered a job at a crypto exchange, for which I studied Bitcoin and inadvertently orange-pilled myself. In those 2 years or so I've become much more hardcore than him. He still doesn't own a hardware wallet and keeps his coins on a CEX.
In my job I met many bitcoiners (reading Satoshi's paper was part of the onboarding), but I don't count them as friends, they were colleagues.

You won't see this but thanks for the reply I missed it at the time.

One, and believe it or not it’s my teenage daughter. Orange pilled her at 14. She’s the most toxic bitcoiner out there. Most girls her age have posters of boy bands on their wall, this chick has a copy of the white paper. So proud.
reply
I'm sorry I missed your reply at the time. Fantastic job on your part. I bet you have a great bond with your daughter. I'm happy for you both.
reply
It's getting to the point where I only get along with Bitcoiners.
Everyone else is a copper top.
reply
I hate to say it but I struggle with friends who are anti-bitcoin or FUDsters these days. Everyone else is either a maxi or polite enough to let me keep talking about Bitcoin.
reply
Exactly. And it says a lot about someone.
Bitcoin takes a lot of work and curiosity to understand. Money is arguably the most important aspect of most people's lives. They should be at least slightly interested in learning more about it.
Bitcoin is the best tool for freedom we've seen in modern history. People who mock it without putting in any effort to learn, are borderline dangerous people. If you're against Bitcoin, you're against freedom. This isn't a crazy position to have.
reply
I feel pretty close to the same way as you.
reply
Missed your comment at the time, unfortunately. I am feeling more and more distant from must people in my life as well.
reply
I'm starting to feel the same way, and I've only begun to believe it might be a good thing
reply
I'm also just beginning to think it might bet okay to think this way as well.
reply
Wish I saw this at the time. I've moved quite far in that direction but I'm not sure it's healthy as it cuts out a lot of people from one's life.
reply
I know a lot of Bitcoin maxis cause the french community is relatively small and well organized, but non of them are close friends (yet)
Bitcoin maxi meetups and conferences that you can find through Twitter (or maybe nostr now) are still the best way to make friends in the community. It feels really good when you truly realize that you're not alone...
reply
Maybe NOSTR will be the way I finally meet some locals.
reply
Been going to local meetups for almost 10 years and now have a quite a few ‘friendly acquaintances’. What I value is the group intelligence, reliability, humor, and trust I have in these people. Most, like me, have gone through the arc of shitcoinery and are now maxis or near-maxis (Bitcoin, maybe some Monero, etc).
reply
Wish I'd seen this at the time. Good for you. I really need some IRL maxi friends but they aren't way to come by here.
reply
I am slowly trying to orange pill my other closest friend now but someone at his work got to him and started shilling him shitcoins. He started sending me screenshots of different cryptos his buddy told him to buy. I told him don't buy any of that shit. I guess he needs more training.
reply
Zero. I have a number of friends and family that own Bitcoin because of me but not really bitcoiners. My closest friend is on the cusp. He holds a significant amount of bitcoin and doesn't mess around with shitcoins but he isn't active in the bitcoin community or spend much time focused on bitcoin. But he is an advocate.
reply
Wish I saw this at the time. I'm in a similarish situation but the closest one in my life just won't dive in deep. Glad your friend is an advocate at least.
reply
The first time I walked into a bitcoin meetup, I was surprised to see someone I knew there. It was a very small group, making this extra surprising.
These days, I know quite a few friends own bitcoin, and at least a good chunk of those play shitcoin games as well. Many of them think that bitcoin will be replaced 'like myspace' or whatever, they're more likely in it for the gambling, blind to the potentially revolutionary aspects of what they're playing with.
But I know at least a couple friends that have taken the time to dig in deeper and gain a deeper technical and economic understanding of it all, and its very refreshing to chat with them.
reply
Wish I saw your post when it was fresh.
I'm happy for you that you have a couple of friends that have spent the time. I wish so much I could move at least one person further along the path. The best I've been able to do is get people to DCA but everybody is just trusting me. It's kind of tiring caring the load all by yourself when the price dips 70% and stays down. Nobody has conviction they just know they don't want to be scolded by me.
reply
None, unfortunately. My roommates are too skeptical or nihilistic to be at least curious about it. I have some friends who own some sats, but they're not active in the space—Bitcoin is just another slot in their portfolio.... The closest person to a bitcoiner in my life is my sister, mostly because I've been orange-pilling her over the past year. I can see her becoming a toxic maxi in the next cycle.
At least I'm finally going to my first meetup this week!
reply
Too bad I didn't see this at the time.
So glad you have your sister moving in the right direction. I hope your first meetup went well!
reply
Quite a lot (especially since I live in quite a rural area), all of them Bitcoin maxis. The last 3 years have been very prolific in helping build a trusted network of like-minded individuals. I met a bunch of them IRL, and some of them became close friends! It's becoming really hard to interact with normies, they bore me to death.
reply
Seeing this very late.
So glad for you. I'm really wondering how much more distant I'd be from most people in my life now if I had maxis to hang out with. I think I'd spend less time with a lot of them.
reply
None. It sucks.
reply
Late reply but I feel the same way.
reply
Just one. All my other friends are sick and tired of me talking about bitcoin lol
reply
I know this is late. One is a lot compared to what a lot of us have. Good for you
reply
None. Staying anon so far. Thinking about a meet up in Nashville.
reply
My local area only has shitcoin meetups. Because of work I can't commit to any particular day a week on a regular basis so I can't really start one.
reply
One, very thankful for at least one i think thats not true for many.
reply
Wish I saw this earlier but you are blessed compared to those of us that have none.
reply
Only a handful, and those aren't the friends I spend much time with these days.
Although I've been a hardcore bitcoiner since 2013, in recent years I've been pursuing other interests (raising my family). Bitcoin is not really a big part of my social life or daily life.
reply
I have two. And they're huge crypto gurus like I am and we learn from each other.
reply
Lol, that was actually pretty funny.

I'm the raving profit trying to baptize everyone around me in the orange river

Prophet, but you may have profit.
