Do you see Bitcoin Lightning only for payments or do you also see it as useful for holding small amounts?

If those small amounts are in a lndhub/nwc account run by a friend with a LN bank, then yes. Otherwise no, LN is mostly for payments. Consider your LN channels as your regular pockets with cash, for day to day spending.

Let's be clear, if you are not going to use your sats to receive or make payments, DO NOT OPEN LN CHANNELS. Is simple like that.

If you are receiving more thhan you spend, is also simple: once you fill up your LN channels, empy them using a swap to onchain. Then repeat.

If you are spending more than you receive, again, once are emptied, refill them using a swap, This is all you do with LN. LN is THE PAYMENT NETWORK. You do not keep those sats forever in a dormant LN channel.
