In the decades since, the federal government has poured more than $3.6 billion into trying to ease the hardship in McDowell County, according to estimates from the Economic Innovation Group, using current dollars. That doesn’t include the roughly $13 billion more in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid payments.
It hasn’t worked.
Here in the heart of America’s War on Poverty, some two-thirds of households with children still get food stamps, among the nation’s highest rates, and the estimated median household income hovers around $35,000. Nonfarm employment has plummeted 78% since 1975, according to data compiled by West Virginia University economist John Deskins, as the coal that once powered this rugged place is now mostly mined with machines, if at all, and no other industry has replaced it. The county has lost 67% of its residents over those years, the largest drop in West Virginia, its population dwindling from just over 51,000 to roughly 17,000.
With little faith left in government to break the cycle of poverty, those who remain say it’s up to them to forge a brighter economic path.
“We’re on our own,” said Jason Tartt. “Nobody’s coming down here to save us.”
I reckon we'll see more and more of this as government ineptitude reaches critical levels. My neighborhood already hired a private patrol car because the police are inept. We're going to see more and more communities take their lives into their own hands instead of relying on government bureaucracy, which is a beautiful thing.

As government crumble the best case is free markets allow the more wealthy to fix their own problems. If people don't wait until it gets this bad we could have much nicer things.
Its what annoys me about the Somalian argument against anarchism. A failed state is terrible but the state failing is at least removing a barrier to improvement. I think the US is far from a failed state but many localities are not.
Most arguments against Anarcho-capitalism simply describe the status quo. Sadly, society is no where near ready for the kind of freedom and responsibility we need to have nice things. I believe we still have to learn just how bad monopoly state power is before we can have something better.

Humans are not capable of anarchy. Humans are selfish greedy lazy and weak as individuals. In the absence of government the first thing people clamour for is a new government! If you disbelieve me then please go live somewhere there is no government and see how it goes for you. But you will not because you are not insane or suicidal, are you? Libertarians are over entitled hypocrits who benefit from the wealth and security the state provides while bleating and moaning about how bad the government is. People without government are a mess of bullying and insecurity.

Who let this through the filter?

Inequality in the US is rising. This is what happens when the most wealthy elites come to control your government. Neoliberal voodoo economics has destroyed the US as an economy and society. China now holds the US empire over a barrel of rare earths. US military industrial complex is powerless without the rare earths Chinas state capitalism controls the supply chains for. China won the trade war and has now defeated the US military without a single direct shot being fired. Sun Tzu would approve.
