Does critical thinking, in the form of self-reflection in the closed-minded case, and reflection upon the external in the open-minded case, mitigate any of the downsides for you?
Yes it does. Critical thinking is what I shoot for.

I tend toward closed mindedness more than open mindedness for sure. I do not however have a default to reject new things. I like the novel.

I'd like to tell myself that I'm open minded, but I'm probably not anymore. Simply too old, and my experiences act like a casting mold, as I'd guess they do for everyone. So yeah I will hear people out - even better, I will seek them out. I'd love to have that amazing moment where someone gives you an insight that you didn't have before as often as I can, but somehow, it just doesn't happen so often anymore. I don't think that that's because the world has become more dull, I have.
