I'm setting up an old raspi 3 with umbrel. Keeps crashing before the block sync. It could be the power cable or the portable hard drive.
So I'm thinking if its worth getting a SSD & new power cable or just get an old laptop instead.
It MUST be reliable if we are using it everyday.
Not sure if the narrative of running your node on a raspi is the best option. But it could have another use like an electrum server, pruned node, TOR or NOSTRE.
Thoughts?

I have a raspberry pi and it’s running with 0 problems. I think I read online that doing a raspberry pi with a non-official power supply is a bad idea.

The Pi 3 is significantly less powerful than a 4, I would t be trying to run multiple services on one.

I just had umbrel syncing the blockchain, no other apps installed or running. So its likely my set up is the problem

Raspi4 working fine with Umbrel on my end.
I did have issues with a non standard supply that I thought I could get away with. Using the provided supply has given no issues.

Why do you waste your time with garbage?
You are not doing any good, not to you not to the whole network.

Raspi is garbage?
A lot of bitcoiners like to brag about how cheap it is to run a node & verify their tx.
What exactly are you saying here?

Did you ever bother to read some of my guides about LN nodes?
Running a node on a RPi is not a big deal, indeed, but you have to think about RELIABILITY of a weak hardware used for a node system that require strong reliability, for all the rest of the network participants.
Yes maybe you can use it for personal use with few private channels open, but NOT as a routing node as many of those "bitcoiners" are bragging.
Running a public routing node IS A DAMN SERIOUS TASK, so take it seriously not as a video game.

I've read a few of your guides.
Running a routing node will be when I'm more comfortable with lightning.
I'm just asking if there might be another use for the raspi or just sell it & get something more 'beefy'

I’ve moved from Umbrel to EmbassyOS. Seems like a more developed OS with a better team behind it. Also, now it can run on x86 and is no longer limited to rpi. This means you can buy a $50+ “thin client” off of eBay and run far better than a rpi 3 for sure. Or, I bought a $200 Mac mini and it runs like a dream. My rpi syncs 1% blockchain a day. My Mac mini (10 year old model) synced in less than 3 days.

Thanks
How much storage on the Mac mini?
