Can you explain the benefits? Would it be identical to running tailscale on Umbrel or better?

much better than tailscale.
Tailscale is just a private VPN, but with wireguard you can go public and have the same and better security and privacy.
If you do not run services that you want them public, on that node, you don't need wireguard, tailscale is enough.
But if you run a lnbits, btcpay or something like that you want to be accessed publicly, then wireguard is much better.

StartOS is very stable for me, and I enjoy my instance of AlbyHub it runs.
Can't say wireguard is a killer feature for me, but happy to see developments in this space.
Personally, dropping Tor only interfaces is on my wishlist. But I'm not dying for it either.
