Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.

Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!

We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!

A memo from Sam Altman leaked. It allegedly talks about how ChatGPT got owned in the performance charts (by Gemini 3, Grok 4.1 and Claude Opus 4.5) and that shit needs to get done.

The problem? Besides 2 sentences published by Reuters everything is paywalled.

What a long way we've come from usenet... and what a shame.

Ended a 48 hour fast today because I was emotionally bonking. Maybe not a great idea to start a fast while moving our office.

reply

How do you sleep with empty stomach when food are all around?

reply
8 sats \ 1 reply \ @k00b 2 Dec

I've never had much of a problem sleeping when I'm hungry. I think it's something that varies from person to person

reply

Yeah, maybe people differently experience hungry, because in my case I sometimes wake up through the night to eat something if I'm hungry

reply

@k00b is training hard! it's also important to eat cleaner going into the fast... becuz ur body will operate based on the latest available inputs;

k00b is no fasting n00b. My longest was 21 days. My second longest was 14 days. I’ve done many 10 days. More 5 days. I spent a few months eating every other day.

I’m out of practice. It’s also much harder to fast when I’m trying to maximize focused work.

reply

that's highly inspirational! how did u get into this discipline?

what kinds of liquids do u take in during the fast and how much time do u spend in the sun?

reply
21 sats \ 3 replies \ @k00b 2 Dec

I find all of nothing things easier to do. Meaning, not eating is easier than eating less for me. I’m also fat and that makes fasting much easier. I started fasting intuitively in high school, but rediscovered it when keto became a thing.

I’d drink water and black coffee. I’d walk for an hour or so a day then, but wasn’t otherwise intentional about sun. During the 14 day I trained BJJ on my regular schedule.

reply

if u are out in the sun, ur mitochondria will harvest more energy from the sun thru melanin, and consequently need fewer calories thru food; i call it being "photoelectrically efficient;" if u walk in the cold shirtless under the sun, that's even better;

I never came across energy from melanin. I'll look into it

Why is it so scary to delete data you haven’t needed in 5+ years?

reply

You never know when this trash may become useful. Because of this there were lots of empty cardboard boxes and other broken stuff I hoped I'd give second life

because you might need it!

i know i've regretted before deleting emails >5 years old...

Pleb Lab move is done. I'm not looking forward to unpacking. Nor how distracted I'll be trying to make my office comfortable. But it is done.

reply

Moving to a new place is good also to get rid of old stuff that you didn't realize you don't need it anymore. We have so much crap around us that we do not realize, until is time to move.

Shoutout to @denlillaapan for spreading the word! 🙏

Allow me to clarify that I’m not trying to deify Bitcoin or create idols. Bitcoin is not God, but God is Bitcoin. Just like you are not God, but God is you. And if you accept the notion that everything is energy, that God is energy, and keep in mind that power corrupts and money is power, then the importance of an incorruptible power can become clear. And that is exactly what Bitcoin represents.

reply

ah, but Mr. Kontext. You're spamming your gratitude across all platforms!

reply

Honestly though, that's something that's been weighing on my mind a lot ever since I've been on a quest to turn my hobbies and interests into my livelihood. I've always detested spam, ads and marketing... But where do you draw the line between spamming and getting the word out/being informative? This particular example - I posted on different platforms because the assumption is that different people will come across the message on different platforms. Then there's also reposts, quote reposts, and if/when/how much to engage in that... Ideally I would just create stuff and it would get out there magically, automatically! That seems highly unlikely though, at least until I have a bigger audience and/or a team who'd push stuff out for me.

Pointers on how to find that balance would be appreciated.

BTW, if you and/or any other stackers ever feel I'm being spammy, let me know! I won't take it personally.

reply

I mean, technically not spam even for me cuz it wasn't unwanted information!

But it was a little repetitive, checking notifications on three different platforms and seeing the same message!

reply

Haha fair enough, the repetition part is also what makes it kind of not fun for myself sometimes. Maybe I should just post less, worry less about what comes out of it or what people think about it and focus more on enjoying the damn process.

reply

There's never enough gratitude!

Replacing another machine with NixOS today; three left after this. I'll be going full NixOS this month.

Also a good time to make sure I don't have any sats I wasn't aware of on any of my machines, haha

reply

Doesn't that create a single point of failure?

reply

Yeah, if NixOS has a security bug, all your boxes are screwed.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about that 🤔 I don't think people choose different Linux distros for that reason. I actually think most people use the same distro as much as possible so they don't have to switch context between machines.

Do you not use the same distro on all your machines?

reply

I use different distros. It's just a risk mitigation thing. Total paranoia, I know...

A friend of my wife spends all her time on Facebook, posting photos edited by Google Gemini, and her friends, who apparently don't know any better, tell her how pretty she is, ask her what photo studio she went to, etc., silly questions, and she brags about it. Then my wife came to show me the photos, and the poor friend, who's quite ignorant, doesn't even bother to remove the little icon that the AI puts in the corner, hahahaha

The cold weather makes early morning dog walks miserable. The deer are everywhere eating the rotten Halloween pumpkins. My dog sees (or smells) them before I do, so I'm always caught off guard when she lunges at them. She's mature now, and considers it her job to defend our property.

reply

Relatable. Sometimes when I open the front door early in the morning, deer get startled and run off, and their hooves(?) against the gravel startles me.
