Two step checklist:
- Did you get an email from OpenAI telling you that they lost your data?
- Did you get a letter from your bank about why you're not paying the interest on that $25M loan you took out from a Cambodian IP address?
If over the next few years you can answer both questions with no, you're probably fine.

Same issue everywhere, we should be stewards of our own data, period. Until that changes it is just a matter of time (not if, just when).
IMHO, the penalties for losing data are not high enough, charge them a million per episode, payable to client/victim and you will see how fast that will get fixed.
