True I can keep one or two for emergency back up then give the older phone to someone for free.

What helps is when you can boost someone that can use it productively by donating them your 1yo device. That actually does have a chance to truly boost the economy. But whatever you do, don't stack old, working devices doing nothing - that's waste.
