Because they overpaid. Haha.
They probably called the other interested parties and said can you beat this and they said absolutely not.
I think the Jays wanted to solidify the rotation early so they could know what their financial position was in trying to re-sign Bichette or getting another big name bat.

Still its Boras lol
I feel like yall will resign Bassitt to stabilize the rotation as well heck he is even willing to throw from the pen and having seen the Astros go through arms like crazy you cant have to many arms!

I could see them re-signing Bassitt on a 1 year but if another team offers him 2 he will probably go elsewhere. I really wanted them to go after Ranger Suarez because they need a lefty in the rotation and he wouldn't cost as much as Valdez and term would probably only need to be 2-3 years.

Oh yeah I didnt think about Suarez hes a sleeper guy that has been great. It will be interesting I wouldnt mind the Astros throwing Bassitt a couple of years!

Bassitt is a really savvy veteran pitcher. He has like 7 pitches so when he is on it's very hard for hitters to diagnose and he gets lefties out pretty well kind of mitigating the L/R matchup. He is a very solid 4 or 5 starter on a really good team and maybe a decent 3 on an average team.

I think Bassitt will be offered a bullpen role if he wants to come back. The have Lauer as a No. 6 but you can never have too many starters and he could be stretched out.

I think Varland is also going to be given every possible chance to be a starter this year.
