A phone is an experience blocker; people primarily use theirs to distract themselves from uncomfortable emotions like boredom and loneliness.
I strongly agree with this. In social scenarios, I often refuse to use my phone. However, I also really enjoy the ability to have information on demand. I believe it makes me more productive. There is a possibility though that I'm tricking myself.
When I run, I always leave all tech at home. Inevitably I come up with good ideas or think through problems that had been stopping me.
Maybe the ubiquitous information availability comes at the cost of deep thinking. That would be a steep price to pay.
