The Herzog August Library (German: Herzog August Bibliothek, HAB) is a library located in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony. Also known as Bibliotheca Augusta, it has international importance for its collection of Middle Ages and Modern Age works. The library is under the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.
The library was founded by Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in 1572. Before the 17th century, it was the largest library north of the Alps.
In 2006, the library had approximately 900,000 books, 350,000 of which were printed from the 15th to the 18th centuries.[1]
It houses the famous Codex Guelferbytanus 64 Weissenburgensis palimpsest, which contains in the lower text the Codex Guelferbytanus A, Codex Guelferbytanus B, and Codex Carolinus.
