"As I said on Friday night aboard Air Force One to the Fake News Media, House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics," Trump posted to Truth Social. "The Department of Justice has already turned over tens of thousands of pages to the Public on “Epstein,” are looking at various Democrat operatives (Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, Larry Summers, etc.) and their relationship to Epstein, and the House Oversight Committee can have whatever they are legally entitled to, I DON’T CARE!"
Except he cared enough to excommunicate Massie and MTG for wanting the public to know which elites were likely ensnared in a honeypot operation, while both Reps. have also been highly critical of Israeli influence in US politics. And based on widespread condemnation among the base, Trump clearly miscalculated.

Yeah I am not surprised for two reasons....
  1. The general base was getting more and more mad at him. He was the hold up so getting him to move it along was a benefit himself and the Republican Party
  2. They are going to be so redacted that all we are going to get is names we already know were associates. Republicans last week dropped 28k pages after Democrats dropped the one set that they used to try and say he was guilty of at least knowing stuff and it didnt land.

You and I obviously have very different opinions on Trump and the whole political system, which to me is a carnival that looks more and more like a full blown psyop. Putting that aside for a moment, as a Trump partisan, do you think he is growing more unhinged by the day? Is it possible he is approaching Biden level dementia?

Is it possible he is approaching Biden level dementia?
Nah, it's just Trump being Trump. He's been protecting people. I haven't seen evidence of mental decline. Just a political man.
reply
In his first term he was unorthodox, but he always had an uncanny sense of detecting which way the political winds were blowing. He would go off script and cause himself a little pain once in a while, but always recover. Now, he seems to have lost that sense, and is causing himself real political damage with his base.
reply
He's losing moderates with the heavy-handedness of his ICE enforcement (which I predicted would happen if he went down that route). He's also losing some with his tariff chaos, but I'm not as convinced how large this effect is. Moreso if the economy isn't doing well he's gonna lose support among everyone.
As for his base, I'm not sure what they're upset about... is it really the Epstein files? I know there are some fractures amongst the base over Israel (recent drama regarding Tucker Carlsen)

Regarding his base, I would say these:
  1. Israel First policy. Yeah, that really matters
  2. Epstein flip flop. He stoked the issue, then waffled.
  3. Abandoned Isolationism
He preached America first, then got pulled by Israel into Iran. Now, it looks like there isn't an international conflict he's not willing to pursue (as a distraction?)
reply
I don't think it's as a distraction. I think he wants his legacy to be foreign policy. Plus I think his family has tons of business interests in the middle east, all of which align with Saudi Arabia / Israel, and not with Iran / Palestinians

Yeah. That very well may be. Thinking about support among his base, I think Israel is a real problem for a few reasons. Number 1, of course, is that nobody wants to see pieces of dead babies. But, I also think that Trump's support is closely tied to his image as a strong leader. Netanyahu has repeatedly made him look like an ineffectual errand boy.

I was amazed he won moderates over given what he ran on. It wasn't a favorable moderate platform and I think if the Dems had run anyone decent then there is a strong likelihood Trump wouldnt have one.
He promised millions being deported and utilizing every tool in the tool box which is exactly what we are seeing. His still is 110% heavy handed but.... he said he would do it. The tariffs and economy as a whole is going to depend on those investments actually coming through. If they do he will look like a genius if they fail to a fool.
Just like Trump ran on illegal immigration he spent a ton of time bashing the Biden Admin on the files. Bondi had even made a comment on the list/files being on her desk and she was going to go through and pass it along to the American people but later went there is no list. The base expected the list.
reply
I actually think Trump's moderate appeal was very simple:
  • Be able to string together a coherent sentence, which neither Biden nor Kamala were able to do
  • Acknowledge that illegal immigration is a problem and it shouldn't be so easy to get into the country (secure the border vs. deporting millions)
  • Push back against woke radicalism
  • Prioritize domestic affairs over international entanglements
If he just stuck to these things his popularity would be soaring.

The ICE framing that Trump has made is very short sighted. The optics are bad. He doesn't care. What I see is more people being reactionary moving farther towards open borders.
The reality is what we are seeing is a result of political government's failure to fix a problem. These clowns had many chances to fix the issue but refuse to do so. Reagan tried and others as well. Both parties created this problem. What is happening now is a result of these failures. But Trump is gonna wear all the blame because he really doesn't seem to care.

Yeah, not saying he isn't as sharp. But he is miles ahead of Biden mentally.
Honestly it seems likely he has smarter people around him. He has always been influenced by those around him. Now he has smarter people manipulating him. I'm convinced Trump has very little ideology.

One of the things I would say that Trump has that Biden doesnt is he has advisors close to him who do come out and disagree with him. Then there are also meetings to try and change his mind (the Sec. of Energy, Pentagon people, and National Labs are meeting with him this week to talk him away from actual nuke testing). That was something I just didnt see during the Biden Admin.
Another difference I just thought of is how often Trump talks to the press. That wasnt the case with Biden and so I think we see more of Trump and the way he moves and because we see it we react more as opposed with Biden we just didnt really see or hear from him towards the end.
All of this is to say I am part of the group of Republicans that are also getting sick and tired of his antics. It annoys the hell out of me that they sadly seem to work more than they dont.

I disagree. He has smarter people like Rubio that are manipulating him. He doesn't know it. I seriously doubt he came up with this Venezuela war on the cartels. It smells like a Rubio idea.

No Rubio would have gone Cuban if anything. Trump tried to ramp up pressure and get rid of Maduro the first Admin as well and his cabinet is almost entirely different and he is still going after it.

I'm not making excuses. I just don't think Trump has ideas like this. His first admin wasn't full of the best people. People experienced in how DC works. Rubio and others are really moving him.

Given Iran's recent announcement that they have completely stopped enriching uranium... I dont think hardly anyone Republican or Democrat were against the strikes. They did what they needed to do.
Iran has been fueling terrorist orgs they have targeted civilians and US troops over the couple of decades. With their attacks on Israel it gave the US a clear reason to at a minimum highly disrupt their nuclear ambitions.

Nah. First of all BB isn't Israel. Second Israel buys a lot of US weapons and is one of strongholds the US has in the region.
APAC is not Israel and it sure seems like APAC and the MIC are allies. At best we have a pressure group allied with US military contracts pushing a specific agenda.
The US being Israel's puppet is a bit of a leap. Its a lazy overgeneralization that isn't helpful. The world is not that simple. There are many gangs and alliances. Many crime families and enemies.

Not in the slighest with what Trump has done to them. Eliminating the idea the US would support and accept a West Bank annexation. Not allowing Israel to keep up its Gaza measures and the clear clear threat of not vetoing UN Security Counsel resolutions against Israel stopped them. They still need the US for bombs.
Plus the Saudi Crown Prince trip to Washington is involving the possible sale of F-35s to Saudi.... If what you said is true in the slightest this wouldn't even be something that Washington thinks about.

I would agree re accessibility. The Biden "administration" really was a Soviet style dystopia.
Let me ask you. Doesn't it seem obvious at this point that a bi -partisan back room deal has now been cut regarding Epstein files to ensure that no allegations against anyone powerful in either party will be released?

I do kinda think that is what we are going to get. I dont see a whistle blower coming forward either because the victims identities would come out as well and no one wants them to have to relive what we already know they went through. I imagine what they went through was even worse personally and so I really think it would hurt much more than it would help.
reply
There are rape shield laws where victims can testify without their identity being publicized. It happens in courts throughout the country daily. It looks more like powerful rapists avoiding justice.
reply

Very true and I didnt think about that.... I just have a gut feeling that the big juicy docs are going to have a victims name and the rapists name together and so someone trying to blow the lid I would think would not leak those if that makes sense....
I am sure there are plenty of damming documents regardless I just dont know if the ones that we could use to tie person A to person B would even be leaked via whistleblower.

The thing I saw someone do in the EU was to do a FOIA1 request around the execution of their FOIA request whenever returned information seemed overly redacted.
From what I gathered, that truly pissed the functionaries off.

Footnotes

  1. its called different there but same principle applies there too.

In the US you can challenge the redactions pre-trial. The judge listens to the arguments, does an "in camera" (secret) review of the evidence, and then decides that the government's proposed redactions are justified. The opposing team and the ref wear the same uniform.

I've heard you say that more often (I think last time was when you said that the SDNY judges are basically a second prosecutor team re some samurai/tornado news) and this is worrying.
What's the incentive for the judge to be more than partial only to the law?
reply
100 sats \ 4 replies \ @siggy47 OP 5h
Well, my response really was about the Southern District. New York City courts are very different. The judges are at times ridiculously lenient and biased towards defense attorneys there. Where there is bias favoring the prosecution, it's a matter of culture, I think. Prosecutors are free to stroll around back offices. Defense lawyers are not allowed unless invited. The guards know them. They hang out with the judges in chambers. They eat lunch together. They all get paid by Uncle Sam. It's a matter of human nature. You will favor your friends, even if you try not to.

Yep. And then it's also economics. If the defendant can't afford a lawyer, one is appointed. The lawyer is on the CJA panel. Defense lawyers never get to hang around with the "in crowd", but they get a reputation quickly. If they go along to get along, they get more cases and make more money. If they are perceived as pains in the asses who slow everything down, they rarely get appointed. Nobody likes a pain in the ass defense lawyer.
