Another great Thinking Basketball video about how and why the game has changed.
As usual, I'm left with just wanting the league to call the actual violations. Most of the ugly basketball people hate is still against the rules.
TRIGGER WARNING: This video contains nauseating no-calls and may not be suitable for all audiences.

I do like that there seems to be a lot more ball movement now, so I am not going to complain about the rise of horizontal attack but they definitely need to clean up the travelling rules.

I think the extra ball movement is due to the primacy on the 3, and not so much because of the gather rules, right? Like, they could enforce traveling calls and there'd still be a lot of ball movement.

I think there might be even more ball movement if they enforced travelling.
Some of the increase comes from guys using the gather to probe the paint and they kick out if they either get stuck or collapse the defense.
As the video points out, it's harder to elevate for a shot when you're moving horizontally like this, so enforcing the rules would increase the rate of guys getting stuck and needing to pass.

This makes sense to me.

Some of the new moves are really fun, just like the 90's crossovers were after they relaxed carrying.
I just don't understand why there's so much leniency for stuff that's both ugly and illegal.

Ahh I was watching old Shaq highlights and thought to myself wow I miss this type of rim attacking. This video does a good job explaining why that almost disappeared from the game.

Idk. I played in the late 80s. This is different. All the slalom shit it's like are you guys skiing or what? Also it feels like the way dribbles are done today would be carry back then.
Even as kids we got called for carry all the time. Maybe don't call it, just penalize off the screen. 1 carry -> pay 1 BTC fine.

I'm glad they relaxed the carry interpretations enough that we get cool ballhandling.
The best ballhandlers, from Isiah Thomas to Kyrie Irving, don't need to carry to do cool things, but in the early days of the NBA it was basically impossible to do any fancy dribbling.
They just need to call the actual carry violations, which is anytime the hand is under the ball while dribbling.

The better half just noted that if this was allowed back in the day, Jordan would have made it a one-man show and we'd been watching golf. 🤣

The video creator may be era agnostic, but I don't think I like this.

I like evolution and advancement of tactics but not proliferation of slop
