50 years ago today the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior. What would have otherwise been a footnote in history was immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot.

This song was so popular when it came out. Back then, people had strong love/hate opinions about Gordon Lightfoot. Respect for his talent has grown over time.
