In South Africa though, there are tons of things that I thought were the result of liberal governance but, as it turns out, are in fact the result of incompetent governance.

I more or less vote for incompetence now (when I do vote). Keep 'em locked in a pointless battle with each other and we stave off increasing government overreach a little longer.

Yeah, I’m no accelerationist personally, but I can really appreciate why you would be for sure. It’s so sad some of the things that I’ve been told people were promised here over the years by the government.

The poverty here is horrifying. The government can’t really do anything but make it worse though. It’s no wonder Bitcoin comes so easy to most folks.

I have only experienced the western cape, and mostly the garden route. The country as a whole (especially Gauteng) is known to be dangerous, but I can verify that life here is almost exactly the same or better as it was for me in the states in terms of safety and security.

The townships in the western cape are probably the worst in the country. And the reason for that is simply space. During apartheid far less space and far fewer services were allocated to people here. The internal migration outpaced their willingness to zone new areas, as done for example eventually in Soweto. This is why I think it is so assinine for the government to focus on rural land use, when the much bigger problem in large parts of the country would be formalizing informal settlements and providing basic property rights and services to them. If you have a shack in a township it is not unheard of that your community just strips you off your property, or that a previous tenant just takes it over again. The land on the edge of the cities is often privately owned agricultural, or a national or provincial park, making land invasions likely and rezoning so difficult.
