Erm not proud of admitting this, but on days when I am exhausted and exasperated with the kids, this is what I typically say:

*when I was your age, my teacher asked me to memorise this, and now it’s your turn. And next time, you will get your children to memorise too!*

*the sooner you accept this fact, the happier you will be*

Here's one for your students.

- *I'm going to ~the~ school now.*
- *I go to ~the~ church on Sundays*

But for similar nouns we need it: 
- *I am going to **the** gym now.*
- *I go to **the** temple on Fridays.*

Is it just because English is stupid??
