Here's one for your students.
why do some English nouns not need a article? For example,
  • I'm going to the school now.
  • I go to the church on Sundays
But for similar nouns we need it:
  • I am going to the gym now.
  • I go to the temple on Fridays.
Is it just because English is stupid??
I think that's the answer to most questions about English and also why English is so cool.

Erm not proud of admitting this, but on days when I am exhausted and exasperated with the kids, this is what I typically say:
when I was your age, my teacher asked me to memorise this, and now it’s your turn. And next time, you will get your children to memorise too!
the sooner you accept this fact, the happier you will be
