Christians are indeed commanded to pay taxes as they are also commanded to turn the other cheek and love their enemies. Slaves are also commanded to honor their masters. The way of Jesus is to love your enemies. This does not mean that slavery is the way of Jesus or that taxes are morally a good thing.
Its easy to read into the text our own poltics. Opposing taxation is not anti-christian but it also isn't literally outlined. It's just easy to twist the Scripture to justify abuses of the state's power.
What is interesting I have found as I often hear this exact pushback. I never say don't pay taxes because it is theft. Yet that I think is what people hear. I say that taxation is theft. It's extortion. Voluntary exchange is not theft. Christians should not be advocating for theft. Thats what I am saying.
You wanna support the state. Volunteer your money. Dont advocate for stealing from others. But yeah, we have to pay our tax.
And, are we giving to God the things that are His?
Taxation is not theft.
Taxation is paying your dues to the government that provisions you with protection from adversaries and provides rule of law including property rights.
Certainly there are good bad and in between governments but taxation is not theft as you can always leave and go somewhere else but people complaining about taxes being theft never choose to go somewhere there is no government and thus no taxation, probably because they are not insane or suicidal.
