Over the past few years I keep coming up with bitcoin project ideas, but I never follow through for one reason or another. I finally have found one that I am determined to try, however dumb and impractical it may be. Of course I have decided to mention it here on Stacker News first.
I have brought up the idea of creating an online store before, and I have received some push back from people whose opinions I respect. Still, I think it is worth it to try this experiment. I see it as a sort of playground to try stuff out. A hobby. I am investing more time than money so far. Unlike younger stackers who might be trying this to help support themselves and their families, I am not looking to make a profit any time soon. It is more my way of converting my retirement fiat streams into bitcoin, while trying to help bitcoin adoption.
I have done the annoying work that gives me the ability to purchase goods wholesale. This opens doors to a universe of suppliers who can give me low pricing. I won’t be doing that at first, since I would need to stock inventory. I will play around with drop shipping and print on demand to get everything working smoothly and learning the business.
I know it is way too early for a site like this, but I am not in a rush. This is my small way of contributing to bitcoin’s future.
I had a false start with Shopify. I didn’t want to re-invent the wheel at every turn. After an embarrassing amount of time I gave up trying to set up nostr and LNURL log ins. I finally quit. I feel more comfortable with the open source wordpress/woo commerce set up anyway. The learning curve is higher, and there is less automation, but I think this is the better choice in the long run.
I will hold the bitcoin the business receives. I will be buying goods with fiat and selling them for bitcoin. I like that trade. Eventually I hope that bitcoin denominated wholesalers emerge.
I think there are some benefits for potential customers beyond being able to spend your bitcoin. I think that goods shipped from the US are more competitively priced under the new tariff regime, which may benefit people overseas. Also, there may be some US products that are not readily available in foreign markets, so this could be a way to obtain them at a reasonable price.
Bitcoin is the only payment method. I am using open node to start, but I will be exploring other methods. Next up – BTCPay Server.
You can order without creating an account. You can also log in with LNURL auth and nostr NIP-07. I struggled with NIP-46 for mobile, but I can’t figure it out yet. I’ll keep trying.
I have a name for the site: satwize.com. I will probably begin posting on the blog to promote the site. It might be a mix of general bitcoin/nostr news and writing about the store. It’s obvious by looking at the site that I’m not a web site designer. I will work on that over time. I can’t see traffic being substantial any time soon.
I do have plans, but I’ll address those in future posts. For now there is one more site where people can buy stuff with bitcoin.

well done, sir! I'm surprised by the diversity of items for sale. Looking through the selection, it made me curious how you came up with these items and if you plan on any particular theme to the items you sell. It might help with situating your store in people's minds if they thought of a specific kind of thing when they thought of it.
Whatever the case, I love to see this. more people offering to sell stuff for bitcoin is super!
reply
That batch of stuff, believe it or not, is the drop shipper's 50 best selling products. I am planning on having a mix of products. Next up will be physical books and bitcoin themed clothing. I will eventually drop the drop shippers and carry inventory stackers want. Product research isn't the same for stackers as it is for the general public, I suspect.

wow. who knew so many people wanted die-cast cars and trucks...
This is a tangential thought and may not be useful to you: I've often thought it would be cool if a person with particularly good taste made a store where they only sold four or five items, but they were items that I could reliably know where quality and the kind of thing that actually results in a better quality of life. Some of the work I would pay extra for is not having to do the "shopping" part. When I get on Amazon it's a pain in the ass to figure out what is the "right" version of the item I'm looking for. A shop that had four or five very high quality household items that were rotated several times a year might be an interesting way to attract stackers -- especially if the shop developed a reputation for listing good items that were hard to find.
reply
I really think we as stackers are a unique bunch regarding what we want to buy. I know what you mean. I rarely shop for anything, but members of my family will sometimes buy a product on Amazon that was cheaply built and barely functions. There could be ten of the same thing on every page, and it's tedious to check reviews of each little item.
reply
So as far I understand you want to be like https://shopinbit.com for US ? Maybe you should talk with them how they did it.
reply
I know you and your interest in testing new things. Admirable.
My sincere critics about this:
  • never post your intentions until are well established. Your beginning of the site is not well finished and could gave a wrong impression for haters and clueless readers.
  • build your website / shop in silence and not promoting until you get some well done pages. For example if you start with https://satwize.com/about-us/ filling some information will be a good start. Define your mission there.
  • put some content before launching it into public view...
Otherwise is a very good intention even that I do not know what you will be "·selling". But I know you are a good man and with good, wise, noble intentions for Bitcoin.

I will add two more 👀
  1. What if the drop shippers do something wrong and ruin your reputation?
  2. Why selling something because it's on the top list of whatever people are buying, not something you personally use or love?
to be honest, that's not how I imagine buying things with sats — should be the finest things possible — but then everyone is free to spend their money in whatever.

I value your opinions, as always. Thanks

If you only take Bitcoin, prices should be listed in Bitcoin too, or at least in both.
reply
The products listed now are co trolled by the drop shipper. When I control the inventory I will have that flexibility.
reply
Can't you change the currency it shows?
reply
That's not the company. Most of them don't consider bitcoin a currency anyway. I checked.
reply
I'm guessing there's a plugin showing the products. Maybe we can do a custom setup for the currency swap. Let me know the platform you're on, and I'll see if we can make it happen.
reply
It's WordPress//woo commerce

I use a btc-to-price converter plugin that is set up to show prices for my products in sats as well as USD side-by-side.
The plugin I've been using since last year (https://veintiuno.btc.pub/m/digitales/bitcoin-price-converter-woocommerce-plugin/) outputs a settings page like so:
There are other solutions here as well:
WooCommerce Sats by Satscoffee | Github https://github.com/satscoffee/woocommerce-sats
Bitcoin Currency Converter by jimmerioles | Github https://github.com/jimmerioles/bitcoin-currency-converter-php
Plugin Name: Bitcoin Price Converter Version: 1.1.4 Author: @VEINTIUNO Author URI: https://veintiuno.btc.pub/

Thanks for the information.
Wow, this is cool! Thanks for mentioning it, just released v1.2 yesterday #1264580 with less functionalities albeit more compatible with latest wp/woo version.

but dropship is really flexible, one of my friends uses it along with shopify and he's running a wealthy anime products business
also I would recommend you launching a referral program as soon as you complete the site. It's a good UX hack.

Yeah, it is flexible. The problem is that the site owner puts its faith in the company regarding product quality, customer service, shipping times, etc. There are undoubtedly successful stores just using drop shipping, but it's not as easy as it sounds. That's not the direction I ultimately want to go anyway.

ohhh, well i'm eager to see anyways :)

I may be dumb, but what is "drop shipping"?
anyway, kudos to you for executing on your idea! Quick feedback: it took me a while to actually find the page to buy stuff. That should be the first thing! haha
reply
Thanks for the input. I'll have to think about the site design, obviously. Drop shipping basically means that a seller contracts with a company, the drop shipper, who handles everything but the actual sale - product, packaging, shipping, etc. It's not what I want to be doing, ultimately, but some sellers make it work.

One of the best things about being here is the industriousness, cleverness and innovativeness of the stackers, and you're no exception @siggy47.
All the best with this. I'll try to remember Satwize when I need to do Christmas shopping.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you imagined the 'print on demand.' It sounded like something that might appeal to me as well.

Congrats! I think it will be an interesting way to stack.
I just had a little look. The products are quite random. Do you plan on grouping the products into categories?
reply
Yes. That was just a quick drop to get things started. That's on my to do list right after "put something in the about page" and "show prices in sats too." I knew I would get good feedback here on SN.

I love the fact that some of us (me included) were only lukewarm on this idea but you believed in it and went ahead and are pursuing it anyways. That's awesome.
I hope it brings you a lot of fun and fulfillment. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses and happy to help in any way I can.

Thanks. I am being stubborn. I needed a new obsession and source of stress. Retirement is boring.

Wow, this is so exciting! Thank you for sharing your idea, even if early, it will help you to gather feedback and improve t accordingly. Feels like the beginning of something BIG. If you need any help, do not hesitate to reach out. We have some experience with wordpress and dropshipping too.
I agree, the learning curve is higher compared with shopify and other 1click-site options. However, learning to mastering your own site will give you the freedom to customize certain details that would be not possible otherwise, if not with a much higher cost.
IIf I ca give you some feedback, it would be nice to have the products categorized and tagged, that would help navigating directly to the most interesting instead of browsing all the pages to see what's available.
The name is supercool, short and memorable, bitcoin related... Well done choosing it and finding a .com domain.

I like how honest you are 😂 but OpenNode needs KYC, while BTCPay is KYC-free and really easy to set up too.
And how will you handle the shipping, or will someone else ship it for you?

OpenNode needs KYC
Wait... from customers? As in "take a picture with your passport photo page and a sign stating your SSN so we can sell your PII for $1 a pop to Cambodian hax0rz and then you may check out"?

I'll have BTCpay soon. Yes, right now all the fulfillment, shipping, red tape, is being handled by the drop shippers. Ultimately there will be a mix. I actually have friends who handle fulfilment and shipping, but I'm not there yet. If and when the site gets to the point where I can bulk buy inventory, I will use my contacts. That would be the best case scenario.

One of the parts where nostr is not as simple as people like to claim. It's actually pretty messy if you ask me.
