They said it was an impossible dream. They told me I shouldn’t create a Bitcoin wallet that satisfies the requirements of cypherpunk Bitcoin experts, but that’s also ideal for onboarding newbies that have no idea what Bitcoin is. That I should either pick one or the other.
And they were all wrong.
After 2 years of tireless work, we’ve finally built it: the Perfect Bitcoin Wallet!
Well, at least it will be perfect once all the features we want have been added. What we’ve built so far already earns us a spot in the Bitcoin Hall of Fame. We may never reach perfect, but that is the standard we aspire to.
What makes BULL special?
At its core, it has everything you expect from a very good cutting-edge mobile wallet:
  • It’s fully open-source, with reproducible builds coming soon
  • Segwit-native descriptor based wallet using the battle-tested BDK library
  • Uses standard BIP39 mnemonics
  • You can connect it to your own node
  • Supports coin selection and labelling
  • Mempool-based fee algorithm
  • Bitcoin-only
  • Can import watch-only wallets
It does everything you’d expect it to do: send and receive Bitcoin payments. No clutter. No noise. No bullshit. Just a high-performance, beautifully designed wallet.
But we go further to protect our users.
Privacy and security:
  • Encrypted secrets to protect against malicious apps on your phone
  • Secure keyboard to prevent clipboard hijacking
  • No push notifications, no data collection whatsoever, no IP tracking
  • Address labelling to facilitate coin selection
  • BIP85-based secrets derivation
  • Multiple currencies supported
  • Testnet support
Every decision we make must align with our core values: privacy, sovereignty and security. But, what about Lightning Network payments?
Lightning and Liquid network:
Two years ago, I came up with the idea that I presented at the Bitcoin Atlantis conference in Madeira and that would end up becoming widely adopted by Bitcoin wallet builders: allow the user to keep funds on the Liquid Network while allowing him to send and receive payments on the Lightning Network via atomic swaps using the Boltz protocol. This was a variation of what Muun wallet had achieved before, but using Liquid was cheaper, faster and more private.
We are proud to have worked with the Boltz team (and others) to create the software library to enable this, which is now used by many apps such as Aqua and Breez.
When receiving payments, a BULL user can choose to receive via Lightning, Bitcoin or Liquid. When sending payments, all he needs to do is enter whatever invoice the recipient gives him. The app will automatically detect which network and decide which wallet to use based on available funds. We are confident that our user experience for swap-based lightning network payments is the best in the industry, especially without taproot-based swap refund mechanism.
We are also the only wallet that comes with an autoswap feature: when your Liquid network balance reaches a configurable threshold (default 0.01 BTC) it will automatically swap the funds into a secure, on-chain BTC wallet.
Hardware wallet companion:
BULL is designed to become the world’s best hardware wallet companion app. Already, we support Coldcard Q1 by CoinKite and we have built integrations for many other hardware wallets that will be released over the next weeks and months. You can import descriptors and xpubs too!
Privacy tools:
BULL is the first mobile Bitcoin in the world that allows users to send and receive payments via Payjoin, a collaborative transaction protocol which both protects your privacy and allows you to consolidate utxos with lower fees.
It also supports Confidential Transactions on Liquid and non-custodial swaps between Liquid and Bitcoin.
When you receive payments via Lightning or Liquid, you get confidential Liquid UTXOs.
When you swap them for Bitcoin, the new coins are completely unlinked from your previous transactions.
Recoverbull:
We’ve come up with what I think is the best bitcoin wallet backup solution for hot wallets. It’s already available in the app - more detail over the coming weeks.
Native Bull Bitcoin exchange integration:
Connecting the app to the Bull Bitcoin exchange is entirely optional. But when you do, the experience is truly magical. This feature is currently available only on Android.
What is next? Here is a preview of what we are working on:
  • Ark network integration
  • Silent Payments
  • Secure and anonymous metadata backups
  • Advanced coin labelling and selection
  • All major hardware wallets
  • Multisignature wallets and miniscript
  • Nostr-based anonymous chat
  • LN addresses
Let me be clear: this is only the beginning. We now have a solid foundation for a really amazing Bitcoin wallet that is secure, private and easy to used. But we will not stop here, far from it.
BULL is my passion project. We have 4 full time developers with funding fully committed for as long as I am alive (and, maybe, even after!).
I will simply never stop improving it and it will always remain fully free and open-source.
It’s my legacy and my gift to the network.
Francis Pouliot, CEO and founder of Bull Bitcoin.

What a strong message! I hope the wallet fulfills all you said 🙂 Unfortunately now I'm in a fiat land... I miss Uvita 😞
What about NWC? Also how is the ln payment latency compared to e.g. Phoenix?
