Marmot got a little play here earlier this month (#1245772) and in @tuma's excellent weekly recap (#1256081), but it looks interesting.
Encrypted group messaging on nostr made some tracks earlier when White Noise came out (#1031219), but Marmot seems to be another option here.
Marmot maintains strong security guarantees through MLS:
  • Forward Secrecy: Past messages remain secure even if current keys are compromised
  • Post-Compromise Security: Key rotation limits impact of future compromises
  • Identity Separation: MLS signing keys are distinct from Nostr identity keys
  • Regular Key Rotation: Automatic key updates enhance security over time

The Marmot Protocol is an extension on the NIP-EE, the nostr spec that integrates MLS protocol into nostr messaging.
Marmot takes NIP-EE and broadens its scope by creating its own set of specifications, for example to standardize media and group management.
Thus, we could say that White Noise is now powered by the Marmot Protocol, it’s not technically another option!
