That was a wild play. No excuse for guy at third to not be tagging up.
What do you mean? He did tag up? Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
I think what happened is that was Will Smith thought he caught it. If he'd looked at the third base coach or the ump he would have known to run and not tag up.
He tagged up however it became a force out when the ball hit the wall. In the confusion the guy on second didnt run to third which meant that Contreras pull off that force out by himself.
Even though it is a force play if he was running from the moment the guy caught the ball he would not get thrown out at the plate. That's 400 ft away. There must have been some kind of hesitation on his part.
100%. He went back and tagged again. I just posted a video that shows everything that happened. #1255965
Ok that makes more sense.
The out at third base was the bigger mistake.
Smith was running to second and signaled to the other guys to tag up, Dino Ebel (third base coach) was telling them to run but they didn't see him I guess.
I would have to see the video of what he specifically did but if he was tagging up from the get go how did he not reach home before two throws from deep CF?
I suppose he could have been tagging and then taken off when it popped out of the guys glove and then went back to tag up again once he caught it off the wall after the bobble thinking it was a clean catch. Maybe that's what happened.
Good review of what happened. Umps nailed this one. I was impressed and depressed at the same time.
view on www.youtube.comThat is a good break down. I take my criticism of the runner at 3rd back. He was tagging and then started and went back to tag up right away.
I believe it was a mistake to tag twice since I believe you can tag at first contact with the ball. But in his mind I bet he was thinking the guy caught it.
Would have to check the rule on that. I thought you can't leave before it is in his glove so he would have to tag again if it was a clean catch after the bobble. What a crazy play. I love that after all these years you can still tune into a baseball game and see something you have never seen before.
"What the fuck just happened?!" Hahahaha. What an awesome play. Way to secure the ball in the glove after missing the initial catch and throwing a cannon to home. Wow.
