This Week's Issue

News

Welcome to Books & Articles Weekly.
Zapping and engagement in the territory is disappointing. I’m happy that we are still seeing good content. I’m getting used to these lulls, which is probably not a good thing.
Thanks to everyone who contributed.
There is a zap award for the top 5 posts weekly. It will be broken down as follows:
  1. 1000 sats
  2. 250 sats
  3. 250 sats
  4. 250 sats
  5. 250 sats
Posts will be judged using SN zaprank. The cut off time is 9:00am EST (1300GMT) Saturday morning. I will post the top 5 winners shortly around 9:00am every Saturday morning.
I reserve the right to not award any sats for the week. I also reserve the right to deny sat awards to bare link posts. I recognize that link posts can be valuable, so I will only only exercise discretion for low quality links that garner few sats or engagement from stackers.
Happy reading!
As always, please reply with suggestions and opinions on how to make this territory better.

Siggy’s Suggestions

There is not too much to get excited about around here, but I liked this fun poem by a new stacker named @hannotek. I hope the measly zapping and engagement doesn’t prevent us from seeing more from this account. Thanks for brightening my week.
@bitcoingraffiti is back with a haiku that hit home with me. I suspect I’m not the only one.

Are the reviews listed above #1214495 all the new ones posted in ~BooksAndArticles since #1214495 was posted?
reply
Oh no. @cryotosensei is good for one or two a week by himself.😀
Maybe I misunderstood your question. In today's weekly, all the book reviews above the link to your post have been posted after your compilation
reply
All were posted after but does it include all the reviews posted afterwards? Or are some not in that list
reply
Oh, I'm sorry. I see what you mean. Those are all the ones I noticed. Some may slip through the cracks. I hate to have you doing updates all the time. We nned editable posts! One more thing. I'm not a strict Territorian. I think SN will have cross posting some day. I know that ~the_stacker_muse has book reviews too that you can include. @jbschirtzinger is posting a lot there.
reply
Yeah, he has pinged me on a few of his reviews to include in the directory, which I'm happy to oblige.
My intention isn't to limit my directory to ~BooksAndArticles. But on the practical side, I need to source the reviews from other compiled lists, since I don't have the capacity to iterate through every SN item to see if it's a review or not.
These updates are handy though, I can use them to update the list, even if it's not the complete set.

I think periodically stackers like @cryotosensei and @jbschirtzinger should collect all their reviews in a link post. They would earn some extra sats, I would permanently include it in the weekly, and it would be easy for you to search.
reply
The slated changes to the editor might make this quite feasible for me.
reply
There's great value in these directories, no doubt.
I'll not likely do much compiling for ~the_stacker_muse, since I think my energy is better spent (though I don't reckon I've done a very good job of it yet) trying to cultivate the creative side of literature community here.
I wouldnt say I am anti-categorization, but definitely averse to it sometimes.
...I like it where people self-categorize their works especially where it comes to artistic input, but others here have disagreed with me on that, and I see the reasons why -- I did maintain that it is important to acknowledge form if you want to be taken seriously (I.e. people don't just splatter paint on a canvas and get applauded for being the next Jackson Pollock.)
reply
Yeah I don't think I mean for the categories to have any inherent value other than as a convenience for searching stuff up.
It is kinda fun though to see what books get grouped together, and especially the prevalence or non prevalence of bitcoin

When was the last time you read a paper book? by @Scoresby
Reading one now. Always paper book.

I still read more paper books than ebooks. My to-read pile will take me a decade to get through, but I'm making my way through it.
I'm currently reading two paper books: "Pity the Reader" by Kurt Vonnegut "All Art is Propaganda" by George Orwell
To be fair, I also have a couple hundred Kindle books. Some of my fellow poets and writers only publish on KDP, so that's the only way I can support them.
reply
Okay how do you decide which Kindle book to read first so as to manage the expectations of your fellow poets and writers, even if they don’t explicitly ask you for your opinion of their work?
reply
I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but I must clarify that I've read most of the Kindle books on my reader. When a friend announces the publication of a book, I usually buy it and read it right away.
I did not mean to imply that the Kindle books were also on my to-be-read list, but I see how that sounds now.
While they don't always ask for my opinion, we are very open about what we think. Some of us went through our MFAs together, so we have pretty thick skin! But honesty is always the most appreciated approach.
For instance, if anyone reads my poem and tells me they don't like it, or they didn't appreciate it, I'm still happy that they read and interacted with it.
I'm not sure of that addressed your question correctly.
reply
You did!
How do you find so much time to read then?
reply
That's a good question. Some days are better than others, that's for sure.
It helps that I work from home as a freelance writer, so I'm not out and about all day working at an actual job. I also homeschool my kids, though, so that does take some time.
I do stay up until well after midnight most nights, and that's when I do most of my writing, either creatively or for clients. But a huge part of the writing process is reading other people's work, so I always read something new everyday.

Looks like it’s picked back up! When’s your schedule to post these round ups? My schedule may have to update as will get out the next story out in a couple hours.
reply
I post every Saturday morning around 0800 est. I look forward to reading your latest.

Thanks 🙏🏽 Latest story is now out

Hey! Thanks for the welcome and the shout out! And I am ever so grateful to everyone who read my work.
I have more coming as I transition to nostr. I've written poetry for years, and I have a lot of it online. But as I have recently come to Bitcoin, I am reorienting myself to this community.
I look forward to supporting you all, and I thank you for your support.

Bring it on
