This is what I always thought... but then I got into coffee, and I feel that I can reliably tell a good coffee from a not so great one. Is it possible that coffee is actually just different from wine in the ability to tell quality?
The other thing to say is, there is a whole literature in game theory / economics on gifting, which is essentially wasting money to show how much you care. Maybe wine is in that category. If that's the case, then the price tag itself is what matters, not the taste.
I don't doubt there is a $5 difference between a good cup of coffer and bad, but it highly unlikely that there is a $5000 difference.
Wine seems to be the same. There is shitty wine and good wine and lots in between, but good wine is probably not much more than $100 better than shitty wine.
