Like with anything, some people just take it too far.

Too many busybodies who won't let people suffer the consequences of their own actions.
People should look up 2 Thessalonians 3:10

You know what's funny...
When I talk to politically moderate Christians that say they are concerned about reducing government "services" for the poor they never mention this verse.
Obviously Jesus commanded us to care for the widow and the orphan. The stranger and those that need help. But also he commanded US to do this. Not Rome.
These same people fail to see how they are doing the same Christian nationalists want to do. Enforce their own set of preferred morals through force. But it is hard to see it because they are the status quo.

Compassion needs to be balanced with an acknowledgment of sinful human nature. Paul understood that balance. He made collections for the poor, and showed great sympathy for them. Yet, he understood that laziness was a reality to contend with as well.
We can debate the relative balance of these two priorities, compassion and responsibility. But we need to be able to have the debate. When those who side with responsibility get called evil, then no debate can be had.

Indeed. Sadly far too many Christians are busybodies too.
The problem at the root has more to do with how we think differently. Most people do not think about things the way you and I do. Not our positions but literally the way they think is different.
Most people think in boolean: good|bad
I tend to think in trade-offs. Obviously there is wrong and right and our Creator is the authority on that... and yet He allows us to choose terrible things. We allows us to choose how much we give. The false god we have constructed called the state is a harsh god that will kill you without hesitation.
There's only one God and King. Christ.

The paternalism on the left and the right really annoys me. Guys... this is why we can't have nice things. Mind your own freaking business. Clean your room. Be a man. Be a woman. Stop trying to be everyone's mom.

The left is pretty much all paternalism but on the right we have the "christian right" and people like Tucker Carlson who seems to be a left-winger if you ask me. He just has some different preferences on some issues.
The funny thing I've found with some of my progressive friends is that we dislike Tucker for VERY different reasons. Their reasons are terrible reasons obviously. Mine are the correct reasons... ;)
