My Toronto Blue Jays did a great job this season handling the disgusting, despicable, dastardly Yankees beating them in 8 out of 13 games.
The Yankees are a different team now and the playoffs are a completely different animal. The Yankees have a lot of momentum finishing the season on a run and playing very well in the wild card series. Their defense, which was disastrous at times in earlier series vs the Jays, was actually quite good against the Red Sox in the wild card round. Their bullpen which was in shambles earlier in the year seems to have at least settled in to the point that it doesn't lose them games and their starting pitching has been very good down the stretch.
So how do you beat them? With these simple (simple to say- not to do) steps:
  • Shut out all the noise. The grandness of playing the Yankees. The manufactured beefs their loser manager is trying to create (I won't get into that, but I have lost a ton of respect for Aaron Boone). The scrutiny of the American national media. The sign stealing or fake sign stealing games the Yankees play. The pressure of playing two games in Yankee stadium.
  • It takes 26. All year the Blue Jays have been a complete team getting contributions from every guy on the roster. That can't change now. Sure you are going to need some big hits from your stud hitters and some great pitching from your top pitchers but a series win will only come if they play Toronto Blue Jays brand of baseball.
  • Limit the damage. The Yankees hit a ton of home runs. It has been their primary way of scoring runs in the regular season. You have to try to limit the power threat and when they do hit homers make sure they are solo homers and not 3 run homers. Be aggressive, pitch ahead, don't walk guys, play good defense. They want to put runners on base and hit bombs. You have to prevent them from putting up crooked numbers. The Yankees can go into offensive lulls when they aren't hitting homers. You have to at least limit their power.
  • Don't let Yankees pitchers off the hook- The Yankees played well and pitched well in the Red Sox series but the Red Sox batters struck out a lot and chased a lot of bad pitches. Don't chase pitches out of the zone. Grind your at bats. Foul off pitches when you get behind. Get starters out of the game as early as possible and into the Yankees pen. The Jays did this very well against the Yankees this season. They had Rodon and Schlittler having absolute break downs on the mound out of complete frustration over not being able to close out at bats. Some times a 10 pitch AB in the 2nd inning even if it ends in an out will pay dividends in the 5th or 6th.
  • Seize your opportunities- The Jays will get runners on base and in scoring position. They need to maximize those opportunities. Down the stretch, until the final series, the Jays really struggled leaving a ton of runners on base. If you get a couple guys on, you need to find a way to get one of them in. Don't be reckless but don't be afraid to be aggressive on the base paths or with run generation. If a safety squeeze is needed, so be it.
Let's go Blue Jays. You need to win two at home and on the road and you will be in the ALCS.

All the best for the series! Last summer I was in Portugal and there was a guy sitting next to me in a restaurant with a Blue Jays cap making reference to the 1993 Championship. I wish you repeat this year!
